The Critical XR has a large color screen, you can change the color theme to suit the user. The letters and numbers are large making them easily readable.

The XR works via a touch interface, making it easy to cover for hygiene purposes. The display shows several different settings: voltages, amps, duty cycle, and clamp (similar to tracking). You can also register the duration of the session with an hourly rate. The XR model can store up to 6 preset voltage values, allowing easy machine switching between line and shader. Unlike Critical's previous power supplies, the XR model's housing is made of aluminum. The Critical XR model can be used with or without a footswitch thanks to the footswitch override button. Also, there is a special starting option for rotary machines that need an extra boost to start, like Cheyenne. The XR is supplied with a magnetic mount.

The Critical XR model has a single input for machines. If you prefer to connect two devices at the same time, you can use the Critical XR-D model, which has a double input.
